The Hamcelerator Express

Hey everyone!

Today was even more HAM than yesterday! Yesterday, one HAM beast named Christine Chen approached Luke and me, needing help with her website. One of her goals included creating a website where people can search through the site to find videos. I’m not sure if she’s okay with me going over more about her “million dollar startup idea”, so I’m not going to elaborate further on her idea. Anyways, her website will require her to save and search through data in a database, which means that her website will need to have a serverside application. Fortunately or unfortunately, Luke and I are the only mentors in the Hamcelerator that know how to write a backend; Luke with Ruby on Rails and me with Node.js + Express. Since Luke is officially a teacher of the Unreal Engine team, I decided to abandon my buddy Dylan and help Christine out. Sorry Dylan!

Regarding my work with Christine, things definitely went great and we got tons of things done! It’s the end of the day and I taught her a bit of Javascript and how to write a Node.js and Express app that can handle rendering HTML templates through AJAX GET requests and it handles getting data from the user in HTML forms through AJAX POST requests.

We were about to get started on writing data to a database (MongoDB), when the day ended. Oh well!

I can’t wait for tomorrow!
