Because smartphones are in general not made for the car — apps may not work in Android Auto, display elements may be too small, and they will require touch interaction. Touch in general is not good when you are at the wheel because it requires you to take their eyes off the road to hit the icon with the finger. Chris as a device has a gesture sensor and a car optimized audio setup for speech recognition, and a glanceable display that shows you only the information you need to see. What else? The voice input will work much better due to an optimized audio setup for the car. Last but not least ALL cars, whatever the age, model and manufacturer, can be upgraded with Chris as a standalone aftermarket device.
