2016 in Pop

Chris Russo

It’s that time of year again!

…Actually, these comics are a little late this year. Whoops.

Well, anyway, if you know me, you know I’m obsessed with pop music and the Billboard Hot 100, and a part of that obsession is cataloging my favorite and least favorite pop songs of the year. You might not like pop music — lots of people don’t! But you can’t deny that it’s important. It has vast reach, and tons of potential staying power. Most of all, it helps set the cultural tone. How appropriate that a lot of 2016’s pop music was slow and depressing!

Yeah, 2016 wasn’t a great year for pop. Or, you know. Much. But before we get into the garbage this year has to offer, some honorable mentions. Here’s a few songs released last year that didn’t make the Top 20 but that I listened to over and over.

~~~~~~~~HONORABLE MENTIONS~~~~~~~~
If you’re interested in hearing any of these songs, I made a playlist of them on Spotify! Give it a try, I think you’ll like it.
Anyway, now for the actual list. Just like last year, the criteria was only songs that were released as singles and charted in the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 were eligible for either list. And again, I’m not a professional music critic or anything, and these represent my opinions and nothing more concrete than that.
Click here for the audio for this song. I would’ve linked the video but they added like three extra minutes to it, which, ugh.
Click here for the music video. He’s actually yelling on top of a building about his phones! I literally just watched this for the first time!
Click here for the music video. Sorry if you do.
Click here for the infuriatingly self-important music video for this piece of trash.
Please don’t click here for the music video for this song. Why not go take a bath or do something nice for yourself instead.
Click here for a live version of this song, because there’s no video on YT because Apple Music is garbage.
Click here for the lyric video for this song, cause I like it more than the music video.
Click here for the music video for this song. And throw a dance party!
Click here for the music video. Sorry it’s just Ari lying around in lingerie and making a lot of uncomfortable eye contact.
Click here for the music video for this song. Seriously, please do, it rules and it has like a fraction of the views all the others do.
