As a digital marketer, I am constantly asking my clients: “Who is your customer? What do they think, believe, want? Where do they spend their time, and how does your product or service make their lives better?”

It’s a question we ask businesses, but what about organizations that serve businesses? If we have a business network, and we want to help business owners, don’t we need to be asking these questions about our customers?

So, let’s look at a few definitions of entrepreneurs. Mind you, if you ask 50 people to define entrepreneurship, you’ll get 50 different answers, depending on…

I have never found anything more challenging (or more rewarding) than the work it takes to run my business. To stay inspired, to work long hours, to chase my dream. I am not even sure if some people consider me an entrepreneur, but who cares. I am someone who sees problems and believes, above all else, that there are solutions.

That is my definition of entrepreneurship.

We’re the ones who will try something that might not work, build something so we can learn from the experience and share our ideas so that our experience might help someone else solve the…

I am reading a lot more than I am writing lately. Actually, that’s not 100% true. I am still writing as much, if not more, but I am not publishing the writing — mostly I am engaging in more intimate conversations, and peeling back the layers in the community-building work that I am doing.

I am fine-tuning the work I am doing in my community, to focus more intentionally on the underserved, under-the-radar businesses and entrepreneurs who traditionally are not included in the conversations of Economic Development.

I recently discovered a resource called Civic Engagement and the Restoration of Community

I recently described myself as a woodpecker, annoyingly pecking on the heads of folks I share my vision for the business community with — because I see so much opportunity ahead, and even more accelerated economic growth for our community, IF we will begin to work diligently toward a singular, unified goal of a more inclusive, transparent ecosystem for small businesses.

At this point (8 years of building Lakeland Business Leaders) I feel like a broken record.

I know it’s usually not recommended that leaders are self-deprecating — “Don’t point out your weaknesses to your audience,” I was once advised…

I was thinking about the beginning. The first days, months and now years of what I think of as “Reinventing Chrissanne Long.” Last night I was recognized as an Emerging Leader in Polk County. I joined an elite group of individuals who have been honored with this distinction over the last 8 years.

As I realized that I had been selected, I was overcome with emotion — humbled by the feeling of being recognized in this way, but also thrilled at the realization that what I am doing is making a difference, at least, in the eyes of the people…

What if there really are no instructions for getting from here to there? What if that feeling of discomfort, awkwardness, uncertainty

is the exact reason and the point of the yearning we are feeling about wanting to go from this point to that one.

We wake up one day and there’s an idea, a fleeting thought. We let it hang out in our minds for a few minutes, but we discard it quickly.

It’s crazy.

I don’t know how.

It won’t work.

And if that has worked in the past for the ideas you’ve had, you might not know what…

We all remember the story of the Troll who lived under the bridge and refused to allow the Three Billy Goats to pass, when they arrived at the bridge. They wanted cross in order to enjoy the green grass on the other side of the bridge. But instead of letting them pass, he threatened to eat them. The first two Billy Goats convinced the troll to let them pass, promising him that their big brother was bigger, and would be a much more satisfying meal. …
