Tangible Intangibles: Questions to Ask While Being Interviewed
A few weeks ago a co-worker and I were discussing some things we really enjoyed about our work environment. It reminded me of a few key questions I ask (or things that I look for) during an interview that typically indicate whether or not a job is going to be a good fit or not.
What do you use for e-mail?
It is a simple question but the answer tells you a lot about a company. It should be a two part answer for technical positions. On the desktop side, the answer should be a SaaS or Cloud based solution (Google, Office 365, etc.). On the server or infrastructure side, the response should be “a vendor” or “a third party”.
E-mail is harder to manage than you would think. It requires a non-trivial amount of infrastructure resources (servers, DNS, spam filtering, monitoring, etc.). E-mail also has to be managed by people with specific skill sets. If the e-mail admin is doing other tasks; you are going to have a bad time. Handing this service off to an outside party is very often extremely cost effective and frees up people to accomplish things that contribute to the company’s bottom line as well as remove an attack vector.
Mac, Windows, or Linux Laptops?
Five years or so ago, Macs were “cool”, but today they are very normal to see in meetings, development teams, operations teams, and management. Windows desktops are dying (as is the greater PC industry). To sit there and be a Windows (or PC) only shop is both naive and restrictive to people and groups. I have not used a Windows based operating system in over five years. I am sure I could figure things out but why force me to do so? Mac vs. PC is not about preference; it is about allowing people to choose tools that work best for their workflows.
There is one caveat, if a company is anti-Apple but allows you to install whatever operating system you want on a PC that is not as big a red flag. Also, if a company has a liberal BYOD policy (and you can bring your own Mac) then bring your own Mac to work and be done with it.
The actual work space is incredibly important too. Is it a huge cube farm on an open floor? Is it a high walled, segmented cube farm? Are there lots of offices and doors? Are there isolated break areas? Are there collaboration areas and meeting rooms easily available? This is about allowing for quiet work times and collaborative work times. The environment should allow you to socialize with co-workers during breaks for coffee without distracting people hard at work. The spaces should keep people who are concentrating “in the zone” and people who are meeting on point.
Lesser things (but important nonetheless)
I have actually found the dress code to be incredibly important. Make sure you are comfortable in the attire you are expected to wear. If you feel best in a suit make sure you do not stick out like a sore thumb when you wear one. Inversely, make sure you are not dragged down to HR if you wear shorts and a t-shirt regularly.
If there is free and ready access to coffee (or other forms of caffeine) that company gets an A+. Bringing your own coffee to work is great if you like it a certain way but not having to bother with it is truly a blessing (especially if you end up working a nineteen hour day).
How does a company handle meetings? Do they allow them to interrupt the work day? Is there a general policy around when meetings should be scheduled? Does someone have a calendar that is routinely triple booked? These are all valid questions to ask because being in meetings where nothing gets done or decided is really annoying. The best company meeting policy I have ever experienced is one that allowed for meetings to only be scheduled on Mondays and Fridays. It was truly great to push meetings to specific days and then have three solid days of work almost guaranteed.
