To Catch a Scent

He smelled fresh

like a glorious summer day

after a quick spell of rain.

The warm glow of the shining sun

the musky smell of wet earth

of grass blanketed by drops of water.

Men’s cologne mixed with

just the right amount of sweat.

And every chance I got,

I found myself inhaling deeply

trying to drink in that scent,

transfer it from deep within his skin to

mine

as if he were something delicious and

fleeting.

In those moments

I could close my eyes, and

for a little while

there would be peace.
