Lizards, Shells, Treasures, and Squash
Day 2, November 1, 2019

Today our adventure started right outside our window. Meet Jean Louis! I would like him to live in our house and eat all the bugs! There aren’t too many bugs in our cottage per say but I wouldn’t mind the ones that are there getting gobbled up!
We started our day by heading to Vigie Beach. To get there we drove through Castries, alongside a runway, and then past an above ground cemetery of military officers.
When we arrived we pulled off the road and parked in the beach in between the beautiful trees with massive thick green leaves and some sort of nut or fruit hanging from them in bunches.

The sand was so nice and the water looked inviting, especially in the humid heat, but we felt unsure of going in because the waves broke right at the beach and we weren’t sure of what kind of current we would be dealing with. It’s been a while since we have been in the ocean and we needed to go some place with more people so we could feel safe stepping back into the sea.
We wandered the length of the beach and my calves and ankles screamed with all the effort as we sunk into the sand with every step.
When we reached the end of the sand we continued on around the point wandering from rock to rock, Rob looking for crabs and me looking for the infamous Fer de Lance, convinced one could be at my every step!
Eventually we found ourselves in amongst these massive trees, I really should learn their name, with vines hanging down. Rob found a coconut still in its husk and decided to try his hand at breaking one open… it was hard and he didn’t lol.
We also found TONS of tiny crabs and beautiful shells in this little beach section.

(Rob found a crab! But it was way under the rock and he didn’t want his fingers to get pinched 😆)
On our way back to our car I spotted the one thing we had come all the way here for…
TREASURE!!!!!

How cool is that lol!
And then, when we had almost made it to the car we spotted one more thing!
After going to Vigie beach we decided to head to Reduit beach because we had learned that there was a Canadian vs St. Lucia squash tournament happening at a yacht club there and we thought it would be great fun to go and cheer them on. When we arrived at the parking lot we discovered that it was filling with water because the waves were spilling in over the sand from high tide, which turned out to be quite handy because we could rinse our feet off on the way back to the car.
To kill time before the tournament we walked the full length of the beach, past a bunch of different hotels, and many British tourists who were burning to a crisp in the sun. After working up an appetite it was time for lunch so we stopped in to Spinnakers and I enjoyed a burger and plantain fries and Rob had a soup, which he, after ordering it thought it was a ridiculous thing to do because it was already boiling outside lol.

After lunch we decided to go for a swim since there was lots of people around. There were red flags flying indicating that going in the water was discouraged but we decided to risk it by swimming in the roped area. It was great fun and Rob discovered he can now float!!!
Then it was squash time. We stayed for 2 hours and enjoyed talking to the players and even learned about a school program for kids on track to join the NHL.
After the matches we drove home through windy right roads and hair pin turns.
We managed to remain unscathed by the sun and well hydrated making today a delightful first day in St. Lucia.
