Clarion Alley Mural Project (San Francisco)
When I decided to sit down and begin composing a series of Blog posts highlighting some of my favorite places in San Francisco I knew my first post had to be about Clarion Alley.
Clarion is a living, breathing cross-section of San Francisco. Wall-to-wall mural paintings line the ever changing walk situated in the heart of the Mission district between Mission Street and Valencia. Tourists taking photos & Muralists working on their latest projects are common sights.

The magic here is that the Alley is both constant and always changing. There are Mural Pieces here that have remained constant and relatively unvandalized here for years, such as tributes to local mural legends. These mainstays aside, the majority of the artist’s pieces here are constantly evolving and ultimately being painted over.

When friends visit from out of town Clarion Alley is top of the list and our launching point.

Clarion Alley itself was created in 1992. The walls have hosted over 700 murals in that timespan, supporting over 500 artists. The alley receives over 200,000 visitors annually.

Per the Clarion Alley Mural Project website the mission of the project is to both support and produce socially engaging and aesthetically innovative public art as a grassroots community-based endeavor.

Next time you’re in San Francisco check out Clarion Alley, and grab pupusas at Panchita’s off 16th Street while you’re there.
My next San Francisco post will be a brief break down of the San Francisco Mission District…
