“Men go to far greater lengths to avoid what they fear than to obtain what they desire.”―Dan Brown
What has you stuck? Quite often in life we can feel overwhelmed and scattered. This is easy to feel especially in such uncertain and trying times. We have to ask ourselves what is crippling us? Is it the current stay at home order, economic downturn or threat of COVID-19? Many of us are wrestling with real questions and concerns such as:
“My parents both came to the United States from the Dominican Republic, and they were deeply grateful for the opportunities this country provided. They raised my siblings and me to want to make a difference and give back. They taught us to work hard and aim high, but to also make sure the ladder was down to help others climb up.” — Tom Perez
We have always been a culture that has celebrated personal and professional achievement. We have gone to great lengths in recent decades to revive our founding identity as a “nation of exceptionalism.” …
“That’s what we storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again.”
— Walt Disney
What is Story Behind Story? Good question. I have a belief that behind all messaging is a story behind a story. The core.. the heart.. the source — This is what I am always after when approaching a project. I want to know the why, not simply the what. I have always had a curiosity about our world, specifically about things people call “true.” What makes one thing true and another thing not? …
“I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive…so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.” —Joseph Campbell
In fast-paced work environments, especially creative ones, there is a constant flow of competing priorities. At times, the pressure of quick turnarounds can become overwhelming. Finding a balance between quality of work, client needs, and sanity can feel like summiting Everest after living in the plains of the Midwest for your whole life.
In my experience, I have seen many break under this pressure or become overworked shadows of their former selves. Neither is helpful of course…
“Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future.” — Lewis B. Smedes
Never wait for someone else to make the first move before you forgive and start healing. If you do, you be will waiting a long time. Moving on from hurt and a broken past is hard, but not impossible. Instead press into your own healing and start thriving!
Despite our best efforts, we will never please…
“Sometimes the heart sees what is invisible to the eye.” — H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
When I met my, now, fiancé, I felt something true. Not textbook true, but “I know this in my bones,” true. What I called this and still do, is “love.”
Can we as a species even begin to quantify what love really is? Or, do we lose something primary when we begin to try and hedge it in?
In my years (young to some, ancient to others) I have learned there is this thing called “love.” It is expressed in every culture, creed, and religion…
“Choosing to be curious is choosing to be vulnerable because it requires us to surrender to uncertainty.” — Brené Brown
We are all fueled by something. There is an engine that drives us, orchestrating our every action. This energizing force either propels us forward or has the power to drag us backwards. Sometimes, it simply leaves us stalled on the side of the road.
From a young age I always knew there was something meaningful going on below the surface of the seen. Something more than soundbites, negativity, and “fake news”. I knew there was goodness, light, and joy in…
“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the expert’s mind there are few.” —Shunryu Suzuki
As a creative, fresh perception is key to progressive, unfolding creation. In ancient wisdom traditions they would call this “turning the diamond”. With each turn a different projection is witnessed.
Consciously, or unconsciously, patterns of thought (ideologies) are seeping into our cerebrum influencing our external output. These perceptions are imprinted on us from youth and exist within each decision we make.
Quantum theory teaches us we are interconnected parts of a whole influenced by every other part and dependent on vibrational energy for…
“Change the starting point, and you change the trajectory, and even the final goal! Love is the beginning and the final consummation.” —Richard Rohr
I think it’s true to say that each of us at one time or another picked up a book, got your mind blown, then walked away and wished you had
This was my recent encounter with Rob Bell’s latest book “What Is The Bible”. So GOOD by the way!
As I have written about before, the danger in comparison is devaluing your own story that is unique to you.
We are each a story…
“Comfort kills. Are you doing something on a daily basis that pushes you a little?” —Elise Russell
When was the last time you woke up full of enthusiasm for the day just to be defeated as soon as you glanced at your smartphone and saw the txt messages, emails, and calendar reminders piled up? Or, perhaps it was the latest headline informing you of yet more senseless violence at a school around the corner? I'm sure we have all had those days. For some of us those days can seem like everyday!
In my industry, creativity thrives off of excitement…
