μHandy Microscope Product Review
By Christian Amyx (Video), Scott Amyx (Article)
Science on-the-go just got easier with μHandy Mobile Microscope. Surprisingly it’s compact single lens microscope can provide resolution up to 1 micrometer. Moreover it doesn’t require an app to operate it. It’s fully self-sufficient with its own battery source.
Our kids tried it on their iPads and then on my iPhone. The setup, clip-on and tighten progress was relatively simple with minimal fuss and worked well regardless of the device form factor. (Note that we did not test against other OEMs and brands.)
μHandy was wise to leverage the built-in power of the smartphone or tablet. The pinch to zoom in or out from the mobile device screen is intuitive and natural for kids. Why build a feature when you can leverage. Smart.
The kids found the stickers to collect sample simple to use. It’s convenient that they don’t need glass coverslips. From a supply standpoint, once the kids utilized the provided set of stickers, they resorted to washing the lens with soap and water for their next specimen to study. I have no doubt μHandy has plans to supply ample stickers for re-order.
Overall, it was a seamless experience with little to no ramp up for kids. Microscopy on-the-go has never been easier with μHandy. For higher, more powerful resolution, you will still need the traditional microscope at the lab but for casual science and learning anywhere μHandy is a great way to open the minds and interests of young, blooming scientists.
