The Association of Hotels of the Riviera Maya predicts that next year, vacation rentals will represent 50% of the 46,000 hotel rooms, since it is estimated that in the Playa del Carmen-Tulum corridor there are currently 20 thousand rooms of this modality of lodging, which makes their regulation more urgent.
“ Vacation rental is a lodging service, you should know how many people are there. It is estimated that in Riviera Maya there are 20 thousand rooms for the holiday rentals, mainly in Playa del Carmen and Tulum. There are more rooms than the small hotels and almost half of the hotel rooms in the destination that is around 46 thousand,” said Manuel Paredes Mendoza, director of the Association.
The calculation that the Association has made are based on the offers that are made of the vacation rentals mainly on the internet platforms such as Airbnb, and the growth of Real Estate projects during the last years.
“There are about 10 thousand units with two rooms each on average, which gives 20 thousand — compared to a 46 thousand in the hotel currently represents 43.5%, but I clarify that these are calculation that we will not know if they are accurate in both there is no direct intervention by the authorities,” he said.
In addition to hoteliers see as unfair competition to vacation rentals they do not pay the same taxes as hotels like 3% to lodging their presence generates discrepancies with respect to reports of tourist influx.
