Tulum Ruins at Capacity

The archaeological zone of Tulum received about 300 thousand visitors this summer and with it broke the record that it maintained in this same period, with 250 thousand.

This was reported Adriana Velazquez Morlet, delegate of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Quintana Roo, who stressed that neither the sargassum scared visitors at this point of cultural interest that has a beachfront.

We had the impression that we were going to have fewer visitors because of the Sargasso theme, but as the season progressed, it was exceptional season in terms of visitors, only in Tulum we had more that 300 thousand and it is a record number, the number of foreign visitors has grown a lot, said Velazquez Morlet.

The archaeological site of Tulum is located as the most visited in Quintana Roo, followed by Cobá, in the same municipality; San Gervasio, in Cozumel; and Chacchoben, in the south of the state.

Velazquez Morlet pointed out that 80% of the visitors are the foreigners, although the INAH looks for an increasing number of nationals in the sites.

Tulum

The archaeological sites if Quintana Roo are almost always in second place (nationally). Teotihuacán is the most visited, although there is a different public, there are many nationals in 80%. Here in Chichén, which has very similar audiences, sometimes they are the same, we mainly receive foreigners, he said.

In Quintana Roo there are 13 archaeological zones open to the public and it is from the states with the greatest number of open points for the population.

Currently there is a possibility to open Chakanbakan, how ever, the obstacle is because the ejido of Bacalar request three million pesos for the property where the vestige is located.
