Super bowl Ads

I watched two previous year’s Super bowl ads about cars. One was an Audi video about a boy going to prom, the other was a Chevy ad of a farmer towing a bull to a farm.

I would say the Audi commercial did a better job overall with the images of the car, the music and telling a more engaging story. I think their audience is mainly for men because of the shots of the car going fast and its power and the idea given that the car gave the boy bravery to kiss the girl. The company is identified after a quick intro of the exposition, the boy going to prom alone, kind of sad but the dad makes his evening better by letting him borrow the Audi. The story has a beginning, middle and end and also has the multiple points of narrative structure (exposition, rising action, climax, resolution.) The boy getting ready for prom is the exposition, the rising action is driving the car around, peeling out at the red lights, parking in the principal’s spot and kissing the girl. The climax is after he kisses the girl and gets punched although we don’t necessarily see that. The resolution is him driving off feeling good about himself and the evening.

The Chevrolet commercial is about a farmer or bull wrangler putting a bull into a towing box and towing it a far distance home to a ranch where it then meets some lady cows. The ad’s audience is probably to people who work outside and other ranchers showing that the truck can tow heavy animals and “bring love together”. It becomes clear the ad is about a truck within the first 15 seconds. I do think the ad contains a beginning, a middle and an end but doesn’t really have the points of narrative structure. There is no rising action really or much of a resolution.

Overall the Audi is the better automobile maker and the better advertiser. I enjoyed the prom video because it was both entertaining and a good blend of shots of the car and the protagonist. Whereas the Chevy commercial was mostly about the bull and contained more shots of the farmer than the car. I would say people would be more likely to share the Audi video than the Chevrolet video.
