Of the films in your header photo for this piece, I would be willing to concede this point of all but Logan, which absolutely earned every second of its runtime. It’s a masterpiece which does the impossible by making the Marvel universe’s most inelegant, brutish protagonist into the hero of the most thoughtful, patient, and poignant superhero movie to date. I will be sorely disappointed if Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart don’t receive some awards recognition this year; they elevated the most popular movie genre from summer blockbuster fare to a contemplative art piece about mortality, loss, and the limits of heroism. It’s important not to paint all superheroes with too broad a brush.
