Whether it’s on the bike paths, basketball courts, hiking trails, or fishing holes, Fort Collins is home to endless outdoor activities. But perhaps the best place to soak up sun and have fun is City Park Nine Golf Course, and here are five reasons why.

1. It’s Conveniently Located

Spring is almost here, so whether you’re a student trying to break up the daily slate of classes, or you need to blow off some steam after work, City Park Nine is waiting for you right around the corner. The first tee is two miles from the heart of Old Town, and only a mile out from the CSU campus. I would recommend biking, but going any distance with golf clubs on your back can be challenging.

2. It’s Beginner Friendly

You may already live close enough to City Park Nine that golf balls roll into your front yard. But you’ve never tried golf, or you did and you could barely hit the ball so you never want to look at a club again.

Unfortunately golf is one of those sports that “take a day to learn and a lifetime to master,” but City Park Nine is a great place to get started! Out of Fort Collins’ three municipal courses, City Park Nine is the most friendly to beginners. It’s no putt-putt course, but you don’t need to hammer the ball, as no hole exceeds 500 yards, and golfers have four different tee boxes on each hole to choose from.

3. The Driving Range

If you don’t have time to play all nine holes, or you need to prepare for that pivotal game with your future father-in-law, City Park Nine has got you covered with their “irons only” practice driving range. As long as you don’t knock one into a windshield on Mountain Avenue, you are free to hit as many balls as you please.

Because it’s a practice range there’s no judgment from other golfers, no matter how bad you hack it. Even if you blast a shot sideways, or drive it so hard into the grass you kill a family of worms, you can tell any gawkers that you’re experimenting with a “fade,” or you’re not actually right handed.

4. It’s Casual

Golf has a reputation for being an exclusive, rich-man’s sport. It hasn’t been five years since America’s most famous golf club admitted its first female members. Whatever the haughty reputation, it doesn’t apply to the confines of City Park Nine.

Perhaps my favorite distinction between City Park Nine and your run-of-the-mill country club is that you don’t have to tuck in your shirt! Also, Foursomes are not required, unless it’s super busy, so you can play by yourself or with a buddy without worrying about getting paired with the second coming of Shooter Mcgavin breathing down your neck on every shot.

5. It’s Affordable

The price for nine holes is $19.00, which may be a lot to college students living off plasma donations, but at least you’ll get a sweet tan out of it. If you’d rather skip the tan and avoid the midday heat: tee off at dusk and save a couple bucks by taking advantage of their twilight rates.

If you decide not to cash in for nine holes, you can still spend an afternoon at City Park Nine without breaking the bank. $4.00 will get you a couple dozen balls to hit at the practice range, and you can always use the FREE chipping and putting greens.
