If Refugees Are Banned, The Church Must Choose

The Church Is At A Crossroads

Today is January 25th, 2017, the 5th day of the Trump administration. It is also a day in which the church must choose between Jesus and politics. According to multiple sources, Trump is expected to sign an executive order today that bans entry to the US for refugees from seven countries.

Several immigration experts and congressional aides briefed on the matter told Reuters that visa holders from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen will be primarily affected by the new order.
According to Reuters, one of Trump’s executive orders will issue restrictions on refugees and is expected to include a multi-month ban on status admissions.

According to available polls, the majority of white Protestants and Catholics voted for Trump and a stunning 81% of born-again/evangelicals voted for him.

If, as reported, he signs an order banning refugees from the United States, it will be time for the church to choose.

The Choice: Jesus or Trump

As Christians, we come from refugee people. While we live here on Earth, our citizenship is in Heaven (Philippians 3:20). Next to caring for the poor, how we are to treat other refugees and foreigners is one of the topics most addressed in scripture. In the OT, these instructions almost always come with the reminder to Israel that they, too, were and are refugees, foreigners, and aliens.

When the alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” — Leviticus 19:33–34

This was a call for God’s people to remember that they have been oppressed by the ruling powers and therefore are commanded to NOT do the same to others.

Mascot or Lord And Savior?

The marriage of conservative evangelicalism and the Republican party is an unholy one. Preachers such as Jerry Fallwell and son, Franklin Graham, and Robert Jeffress have sold out the Gospel for a seat at the table of power.

Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please. I will give it all to you if you will worship me.” Luke 4

Jesus said no, but conservative Christians said “Sure…sounds good!”.

The love of power and money is always represented as a dark, corrupting force. From Aaron’s creation of the Golden Calf to Saul’s disobedience to the lament of the Rich Young Ruler, the love of power and money always stand in the way of obedience to God.

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:10

And now the church is at yet another crossroads. The majority voted in a narcissistic, greedy, adulterous liar who claims he’s never had to ask God for forgiveness. The reprobate in the White House is poised to sign an order telling America to turn its back on refugees, a good many of which we created by bombing the shit out of their countries.

Christians in this country have two choices:

  1. Condemn this order, repent and ask forgiveness.
  2. Stop pretending they follow Jesus.

Obeying the order to turn your backs on refugees is turning your back on God. It’s a very public demonstration that Jesus is your mascot and not your Lord and Savior.

You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,
8 ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 Their worship is a farce,
for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’
Jesus in Matthew 15:7–9

Those that follow this directive are turning America into the disobedient Israel that was punished by God through its enemies. They are the hypocrites who prayed in the streets while walking by those in need. They are the bankers Jesus chased from the temple.

The conservative evangelicals are famous for saying America will be punished for her wickedness.

Little do they realize they’re talking about themselves.

Whose Side Are You On?

So, dear reader, if you are a person of faith it’s time for you to choose.

Is Jesus your Lord and Savior? Will you listen to God’s commands about how we are to treat the stranger? Will you remember that we are strangers in this land?

Or will you bow to the golden calf in the Oval Office?
