College Admissions Essay

I was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I come from a good household in which I have been blessed to be raised by parents who value the teachings and standards of the Church. I am a fifth generation New Mexican and have loved growing up in such a culturally diverse community. From a young age, my father has taught me the value of hard work. I live my life by his well known phrase: “Make it happen.” Ever since I was a young boy, I’ve always had the dream of attending BYU. This goal has influenced my choices from elementary and all the way through high school.

I achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 14. Through scouting, I was taught how to always be prepared, do my best, and finish what I’ve started. I have served as the Deacons Quorum President, Teachers Quorum President, and the First Assistant in the Priest Quorum of my ward. In these callings, I have learned to fellowship with my quorum members and become an example for others.

Throughout my 4 years of high school, I have been heavily involved in clubs such as Operation Smile and Student Leadership. My sophomore year I was inducted into the National Honor Society at my school. I also auditioned and made our school’s S-Troupe, a sketch comedy group. With S-Troupe, I will have performed in 9 different shows in front of a large audience. I have participated in 2 varsity sports, soccer and tennis. Through my involvement in these clubs and activities, I have learned how important commitment and time management are. By taking many rigorous courses throughout my high school years, I have learned to manage my time in a way that I can still do the things I am interested in. Recently, I was nominated as a Selfless Senior by one of my teachers at my high school. I believe that I can contribute to BYU’s university community through my example, my faith, and my commitment to serve others.

My educational and career goals include graduating from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology. I want to be accepted into dental school and after graduating, complete an oral surgery residency. Ultimately, I would love to practice oral surgery with my older brother and father in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I appreciate the education that I have received at Cibola and know that it has prepared me to fulfill my dreams.
