Should I say African American, Black or Neither?

You won’t know until you ask- sometimes I’m tired of answering my white friends questions about race. Black people shouldn’t have to do the emotional work to make white people understand how they should see our differences- acknowledge and appreciate them.

It’s draining and I just want to exist without question of how people should treat me or talk to me.

I’m learning to be okay with answering them- genuinely. You know, that means they are acknowledging our differences and wanting to make sure they are honoring me in the things they say and do.

I love to dump my words and thoughts anywhere that will preserve them. Naturally, I am a sticky note writer but I’ve learned journals are better for saving.
