Cracking the “Do you have any questions?” section — Software Engineer Edition

After applying to probably close to 300 positions total between internships and full-time jobs, I’ve compiled a list of questions to ask your recruiters or engineers.

Note: These are more tailored for interns and new grad roles.

Treat these questions as just questions to continue the conversation. Please don’t use this list to just ask questions for the sake of asking questions.

Pro-tip: Have a Google Doc, copy these questions, and then type in the answers on your own Google Doc. Aim to have a conversation with the interviewer!

Warning: Do your research before the interview and listen to what the interviewer says before you ask these questions below. Check the blogs or social media for answers before you ask and practice these questions so you don’t sound like you’re reading them off the list!

Rule of thumb — if you can’t make it past 10 minutes of questions, they’re either not interested in you, they’re genuinely busy or you need to push yourself to ask better questions because you always need to be asking questions.

Reminder: An interview is also an opportunity for you to interview the company. It’s okay to ask questions too!
