Repurposing Old Windows

Windows are home features that have a very specific purpose. When you order them from a windows manufacturer, it’s most likely because you want to add illumination and ventilation to your home, and perhaps you want to make rooms look more balanced with the right number of windows on the walls.

However, windows are no longer just designed for these purposes. With a dash of creativity, you can find a vast variety of ways to create new function for them, especially the old ones that you’ve replaced. If you’re not keen on just getting rid of your old windows, here are eight ideas that you should consider that would surely enhance the look of your home, and at the same time, integrate new additional function to rooms.

1. Window to the world — Glue or decoupage a map to old French windows and display this in study rooms; it definitely looks more charming than using maps as posters.

2. Picture display — Picture frames can be hung on old shutters and they automatically add a rustic charm to the rooms where they are displayed. Another thing you can do is to use the old window as the actual frame for photographs.

3. Faux windows — Glue decorative paper or wallpaper to the window panels and then hang the window frame to the wall as décor.

4. Shelves — Glass windows can be attached to the wall using those L-shaped supports. Such shelves are perfect for country homes that have a dominant shabby-chic style.

5. Towel rack — Turn boring yet functional towel racks into lovely wall décor by attaching them to an old window. Give the old window a whitewash and then hang it from the wall like a picture frame to give your bathroom a country charm

6. Repurposed window hanging planters — These will really boost the look of exterior walls, and at the same time highlight the plants you’re growing in a completely different way.

7. Repurposed window nightlight — There’s really nothing to this project idea; just find a strategic location for the old window and then place rope lights behind the glass part or string the lights around the frame for some artistic lighting, within or outside your home.

8. Message board — Familiar with the glass “board” used by TMZ? You can easily have one like it using an old window. The really cool thing about this project is that there are markers on the market formulated specifically for drawing or writing on glass.
