24k Cat Magic

This is another story about cats. Today, I read a story about a persnickety cat, named Bruno, that was happily adopted. Shortly after becoming internet famous, he was hastily scooped up. Although he had striking, particular ways, Bruno’s sass was enough to capture the Internet’s heart. Is it just that easy for cats? Let's see if history can clarify.

The Egyptians loved cats, and Egyptian culture is famous for cat figurines. Felines showed up in hieroglyphics, and they were popular and prized companions. Think about the Great Sphinx or the transforming cat goddess Bastet. Ancient Egyptians believed that cats were magical and that they could bring good luck to those who took them in.

I think modern-day Americans agree that cats have similar value. I see cats as helpful companions, and I think cat-parenting is a worthwhile pursuit. But, most importantly, cats are of particular interest to the internet. Bruno’s story was the first Mashable story under the subject line “social media.” So, nowadays, cats are seen as happy news for our timelines, and cat pictures (especially those of kittens) are eyebleach. That's purely magical!

According to a NatGeo Kids article, Ancient Egyptians dressed up their cats in jewelry. I think this is no different from our current-day cat collars. In fact, when my little brother found my cat, Theo, we purchased a pink rhinestone collar for him.

Finally, because of the sustained prevalence of cats in human history, I predict felines won't be leaving the media spotlight anytime soon. If you’re able to, go help a cat. Maybe consider fostering kittens, and, above all, don’t forget to love your furry friends!

Please spread cat magic by commenting a picture of your cat below.

Thank you.
