When we’re in “escape the pain” mode, we know comfort is what comes next. But once we get to that place of comfort, we must voluntarily put ourselves through more pain to achieve ever greater degrees of pleasure. And our animal mind has a really hard time seeing past the next immediate result, which, when going from pleasure to even greater pleasure, is pain.
…out and then take resentful days off while feelings guilty about the work that wasn't getting done. I’ve come to realize, life is about a whole lot more than business and I’m here to enjoy this thing. I now plan and force myself to take days off and since there is nothing scheduled for those days I don’t feel guilty about whatever’s not getting done.
Graduating college and freeing up hours of time that used to be spent on pointless assignments each week played a big part in this, but I also said “no” to the traditional career path which would have replaced that school work with new, but still uninspiring work. That decision wasn't easy, but it was very integral to my fulfillment.
