Great post. There is so much about the adjunct system that needs to be “outted”. (I did it for a few years, loved teaching, got excellent reviews, but couldn’t support myself.) One important point is that the current system hurts students — how many good teachers quit b/c we simply can’t afford to teach with no insurance, making less per hour than minimum wage? Not only does that mean a drain of talent, it also means no consistency from year to year for students who want to take more classes with the teachers they like, and an inability for students looking for mentors or even just recommendations. I taught in Massachusetts, and there was talk of unionizing. Not sure if it ever happened…. Keep on writing!
