The Impossible-ness of Living a Joyful Life

“Are you moving into tomorrow ahead of time” — you know, with your thoughts? I’m not talking about planning or setting appointments — these are productive and necessary. I’m referring to the mind chatter, the thoughts, the ruminating — I know you are familiar — the worrying.

You might recognize the words of Corrie ten Boom as she wrote…

Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength — carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.”

Typically we only see the last sentence published in thought-provoking memes on our favorite social media channels and while I love the wisdom of that portion, it is in the two sentences before that I find an even greater lesson. It is there she points out that we ARE equipped to handle today’s load, but we ARE NOT created to handle both today and tomorrow’s load — today.

I find this both empowering and cautionary. It is empowering to know and believe “I really DO have what I need in order to handle TODAY!” “I am wonderfully made and equipped to handle what presents itself today!” It is cautionary as we are not made to handle events that HAVEN’T HAPPENED YET. This is why chronic worrying affects our health and steals our joy!

The second sentence gives hint to a second way it steals our joy. When we are ‘moving into tomorrow ahead of time’, where are we LIVING? Tomorrow. Or so we think. The truth is, the only place we can LIVE in tomorrow is IN OUR HEAD — it is impossible to live in tomorrow with actions, in and of our body, with others, in reality because tomorrow

doesn’t

exist

yet.

We must accept that when we live this way, we are not really living in tomorrow and we are not really living in today — because our thoughts are not on today — so, ultimately, WE ARE NOT REALLY LIVING! This is the #1 reason we are not feeling joyful!

I encourage you to take an inventory, today, of your thoughts.

How much of your stress can be attributed to worrying?

Can you be honest in identifying what really belongs to today and what truly belongs to tomorrow?

How many of your thoughts belong to tomorrow?

How much of your stress can be tied to ‘moving into tomorrow ahead of time’?

How often are you carrying tomorrow’s load on top of today’s?

You owe it to your health to sit with these questions and intentionally create a different way of living. You owe this to yourself! You deserve to live a life filled with JOY! Love yourself enough to learn how to live more in the present. You can do it and you are WORTHY!

Take gentle care…
