The Challenge:

This 2 week challenge was taken by myself. My objective is to take an application I use on daily basis and redesign it by having some additional modifications.

I believe design should be about providing user a better experience and expression, as well as making sure it’s user-friendly so user can always enjoy when using.

My Design Process: 5 Stages of Design Thinking

Empathy 🏃🏻‍♂️ Define🏃🏻‍♂️ Ideate🏃🏻‍♂️ Prototype then finally, Testing Stage🏃🏻‍♂️

Customers always know what’s wrong. They can’t always tell you what they want, but they always can tell you what’s wrong. — Carly Fiorina

Understanding the problems:

Yes, just like everyone, I enjoy using Instagram very much and I have to say, it gave me satisfaction as I get to see how my friends and family are up to in just a tap. And I’m sure there’s a million people just like me, using Instagram in their daily life. So here, my ultimate challenge is to make it a better application.

Assessment of original design:

— Clean, slightly irritating, menu shouldn’t be at botttom as it gets in the way when user is trying to type a message

— Home feed should show more picture so user can see what their friend posted within few seconds

The Process

User Persona

User Persona are created based on my user interviews. For this project, I have interviewed people around me and from there, I determined the key traits and how targeted user’s traits should look like.

User persona = User + Their Lifestyle

User Interview

For user interview, I have visited some of my friends who fitted the personas and according to the results, 70% of them agree that they uses Message Box frequently as it act as bridge to communicate with their friends on social media. Half of the interviewee thinks that the feature should be improved for better usability across the platform.

Wireframes

Wireframing the solution based on the problems that’s identified, and now let’s work toward listing down the pains with potential solutions :

Here’s it:

  • Home feed showing more than one picture
  • Login page with a better interface
  • Message box button switch to side bars

Mock up has been done in a few hours and reviewed to get some feedbacks from my friends, since they are frequent users of social media.

PROTOTYPE

Hi-Fi Prototype

To continue with the process, my Lo-Fi sketches has been turned into Hi-Fi prototypes.

Final UI Design

Validate

To measure the success of this proposed design

Testing 1,2,3 .. Is this going to work?

After a week of thinking and modifying and redesign, I was finally able to validate the changes I had made. This is complete when testing are done using my clickable prototype with 4 new users and the results are quite positive.

  1. 4 out of 4 users can see the latest post from their friends at the first screen(without further scrolling)
  2. 4 out of 4 users can type without having other button blocking
  3. 3 out of 4 users can now send GIFs easily and found the new interface helpful

Takeaway

This project was so fulfilling and has given me a and valuable experience. I really enjoy solving user’s problem by making it go away. Through this case study, I learned that the most important part for this is to know and learn about the users, and figuring out what they want but not what I want.

Note: The purpose of this case study is to practice and improve my skills. At the time of designing this case study I did not work for or represent Instagram.

Thank you for reading! Don’t forget to CLAP 👏🏼 for me and share any feedback in the comment section if you have any.
