If it can help, you can load a custom .env file on Laravel. I did it so if you access the app through domain.acceptance, the vhost set the APP_ENV to “acceptance”. Laravel will load a .env.acceptance file if it exists automatically.
You would also need to set APP_ENV to “acceptance” on your Codeception config so that you are working with the same database.
