All analysts should ask one basic question — does the causal model work in reverse. It’s a basic qualifier for all regression work. Here I would argue that the discourse over time actually made muslims feel more muslim. In other words it was never being muslim, it was being directed to consider muslim values and what others in society were telling you. In that sense the real driver wasnt being muslim, it was defining what it is to be a msulim voter. Having lived in Indonesia I have seen how quickly people adopt what is becoming conventional views. A longitudinal analysis of media would confirm this hardening of values over time.
