So, about our name…
Paul McDonald

Being an Afro-Latino whose family is from Puerto Rico I’m totally offended by your product name. Bodega! Really?! Immediate questions are where are you from and what do you know about Bodegas?! From what you’ve stated you asked some people if they thought it would be offensive. Who are these people? Your blog asks for claps at the end and I usually clap for entrepreneurs, in fact I put them in my business magazine, but for YOU here are my conditions. I will clap when you say you’ve come to New York and bought something from the owner of a Bodega. I will clap when you have visited Hunter College’s Center for Puerto Rican Studies in Spanish Harlem and asked some professors like Edwin Meléndez about the significance of Bodegas. I will clap after you watch this video interview with the author of The Bodega: A Cornerstone of Puerto Rican Barrios by Professor Carlos Sanabria. I will clap when you have visited the Nuyorican Poets Cafe on open mic night and asked some poets to tell you about Bodegas. Yeah, you definitely asked the wrong people. Finally, I’ll clap when you change the name to anything but Bodega. In fact, here’s a suggestion, if you want to appropriate a name that is already part of American culture how about reprise the name Automat — Automat 2.0. Consider that a gift.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
