What you’ve described is actually the foundational principle of liberalism, not conservatism. Liberalism is: “a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties.” Why is that so hard for conservatives to understand? Because it is the result of proceeding on a fixed worldview, not fluidity. Throw in some anachronism too, belief that things in the past are always better than the present. It’s a mental illness, really. And so, getting someone to meet you halfway down the mountain is a liberal endeavor that requires one person giving something up. Too bad, say the conservatives. “I’ve got mine. Go get your own. Then we can talk.” This attitude persists even through the filter of religion, where leaders such as Jesus call the advantaged or wealthy to give up what they have and serve others. Instead, conservatism has invented the Prosperity Gospel to justify their greed. I accept your noble attempt to get conservatives to consider an alternative way of thinking. But saddest of all, is that when it comes to racial issues, too many people are stuck on the idea that they are superior to others, and deserve to be on top of the mountain. It strikes fear in their hearts to even think of coming down.
