I wonder if the failure of the American experiment was less to do with a lack of moral universals, and more to do with a lack of morals shared by people with more community-based identities? American morals come from frontier culture and are shared by people with ‘rugged individualism’ identities instead, where asking for help from others is seen as weakness, cooperative work with others in the community frowned upon and, consequently, reaping the benefits of pooled resources rarely experienced (hence the lack of public goods). Now the internet is here providing all but the most gullible Americans with evidence that the only ones benefitting from such a system are the privileged few born into wealth and that quality of life in general, is much better in most other, community-based, Western countries..
