History

The history of Patra dates back to prehistoric times, when the Achaean tribes settled in Greece. The town was named after Patrea, leader of the Achaeans of Sparta, who had been exiled from their homeland and sought a new shelter. The City of Aroe, Mesatis and Antheia were formed by the unification of three Ionian cities The Achaean League formed in 280 B.C. Patras played a crucial part. This league initiated for the very first time the political idea of transferring all governing powers to western Achaea.
