Does this role exist? My guess is that it will, if it doesn’t already. I don’t know of any teams doing this today. Do you?

I think it depends on what you mean by ‘platform.’ If you mean common services, then it often rests with the chief architect in the early days and then gets a product manager later.

For companies that build an actual platform (that can be used by people outside of internal developers), the successful ones create an explicit product management function for it very early — or go through significant re-work later on. Salesforce, for example, did this early: they had a separate general manager and product managers for the platform when they had a 200 people and were pre-IPO.
