SHOUT-OUT: Image above and text below are from Writing Primer, my brother Avery’s new kick-ass website. WP features uniquely awesome content, published weekly. Avery is also a skilled ghost-writer, tutor and one-page marketer. Check him out ;)

Survival. Survival skills are not just for doomsdayers but for anyone trying to navigate the strangeness of everyday life. A little preparation goes a long way when things get real. Mental hazards are no joke. Staying calm is your number one tool.

Real heroes. There are several survival stories in here, but no story was more striking to me than the story of Rick Rescorla. Rick did not make it out alive, but because of his survival skills, many others did. He is a powerful example.

Shoutout. Thank you to Mark Lisky, who helped me distill the vast world of survival training. Mark has developed conditioning programs for SWAT teams and US Army Special Forces and has had a long history working with the special operations community. Thanks also to my brother Jon for introducing me to Jerome Klingaman’s Coyote Rules and for sharing his own survival wisdom. Jon is an Army Major with Ranger tabs. His stories from Ranger School have taught me a lot, particularly that nothing breaks a person down like no sleep.

Feed. Feed this forward if you think it can help someone. If this primer gets one person out of a bad situation, then it’s working.
