Thanks, good piece, a mirror, I suppose, for those of us who grew up dirt poor. I think the focus on “context” is absolutely right on. When I enlisted in the US Navy and meet fellow crew members on an ammunition ship in SF, I was shocked to learn from twenty or so shipmates on the deck crew, mainly from the American South, that all joined the military to escape one form of poverty or another. In a different way I have long thought of the Navy being the way I broke out of poverty. Then the military helped me break out of that “context” by paying for my college. From my research this is still the prevailing narrative for most of the 1% who serve in our nation’s military. It’s a good story and a great investment. Thanks.
