The classic advice, “If you want to be an artist, make art” applies here. If you want to be a website developer, make a website. That’s what I did (Feb-2017) and it was good enough for two friends to hire me to make sites for them.
It’s slow going, but I’m getting paid to learn and solve real problems. I may end up working for only a-few-bucks-an-hour, but I’m also learning which parts I love (design stuff), and how I want to specialize as a freelancer. In time, I’ll get better and faster, and so will the proof that I am a web developer.
