Dental Insurance in Sri Lanka

Growing up in UAE, my parents and I were benefited by the medical insurance supplemented to us via Dad’s workplace. We had free dental which covered your usual dental surgery (wisdom teeth removal) and dental fillings. When you are a kid, teeth cleaning is imperative because of cavities in your formative years.

Moving back to Sri Lanka, I never thought of medical insurance because teeth cleaning costs around Rs. 3000 for an adult at Lanka Hospital but after my wisdom teeth removal surgery, I decided to go for it because 1) regular cleaning costs a lot 2) surgery with general anaesthesia is a lot of $$$. The surgery was around Rs. 90,000+ at Lanka Hospital including fees of the dental surgeon, anesthetist, room charges etc. I was able to claim it via the medical insurance provided for me via work.

As per the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka, we have 28 insurance companies licensed to carry out insurance business. I was able to get in touch with 5 of the major companies. This is after opinions and feedback from friends and people on Twitter who suggested the below. I have also suggested the below insurance companies who offer dental as an added benefit.

1 — AIA Insurance: (Dental N/A) — Great website but not a very comprehensive medical/health insurance plan. They don’t offer dental either. Customer service 3/5

2 — Allianz Insurance: (Dental N/A) — Customer service was so bad, I decided not to inquire further

3 — Janashakthi Insurance: (Dental N/A)- High premium per annum. Nope

4 — Sri Lanka Insurance: (Dental N/A)- High premium per annum. Not interested

5 — Ceylinco Insurance: Bazinga! Dental plan offered i.e. dental surgery and fillings too at an annual premium of Rs. 27,000. The agent exchanged emails and came over to office, signed the documents and I was able to get the insurance in a month

When I had my wisdom teeth removal surgery, I had used Ceylinco and the claim process was hassle free at Lanka Hospital.

P.S. I was not endorsed or sponsored by Ceylinco to write this post. It’s my honest opinion on signing up for medical insurance. Please comment below. I would love to read your feedback!
