Given the long history of abuses of power by religious leaders in the past, I do not believe that religion has any business getting involved in politics in the first place. This is a point where I completely agree with the words of Thomas Jefferson:

“In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. It is error alone that needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself.”
~Founding Father Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to Horatio Spofford, 1814

Why else did our founding fathers create the separation between church and state if not to put an end to the abuses of secular power by those unfit for public office due to their intolerant views of others?
