But is Audu Ogbeh totally wrong to seek concessions from fertiliser producers in Nigeria? No. I am wary of absolutism because it stifles the opportunity for healthy discussions. Government has a role to play in influencing prices especially farming inputs like fertilizer.

To add to what Oyokuyi has said, we worry too much that we may have given the industries preferential treatment to start off, but we forget two important things — they have to build almost all their infrastructure themselves, roads, power, water supply, the works; and also as important in the context of 2016, is the fact that there is a scarcity of USD, which is asphyxiating the economy.

Given that our internal market is underdeveloped like it or not, the priority now must be getting those dollars in so that the local economy can start to breathe, while the government focuses on building those important transport links without which our internal market can never truly develop.
