Hey Lois, thank you for bringing up this distinction between POC and Black people. In the title I draw attention to the pervasive issue of “othering” racial minorities in the academy. In the piece itself- as you pointed out- I narrow in on Blackness. This is due to the fact that I am a Black women and thus Blackness, or rather how Blackness is perceived in an American context, governs how I experience everyday life.
Further, due to anti-Blackness, non-Black POC navigation of academic structures are inevitably different than my own. The title is a collective call into community. The piece itself speaks to the specific experiences of Blackness while simultaneous highlighting that dehumanization in the academy extends beyond Blackness as well.
