04. Salvatore and the quest to save the world
Salvatore wanted to save the world. For as long as he can remember, that was his only dream.
His first words when he finally started speaking were:
His parents, nerds that they are, were delighted. Geekiness was genetic! They hurriedly put a red, make-shift cape around their son.
But Salvatore did not want to be a flying crusader decked in latex. Super heroes are not real — he would always say whenever his parents talked to him about Superman, Captain Barbell, and Super Inday and the golden bibe.
“The only way you can save the world is through knowledge,” he said.
At 5 years old, he started researching the cure for cancer.
At 8, he was staging marches in front of the Presidential palace to get the administration to raise the budget for Environmental care.
At 14, he was taking college-level Mathematics and he read the Constitution during breakfast.
His parents, although disappointed, were supportive of his dreams. They stashed away Excalibur in the trunk of their car. They lost Mjolnir during the move from their small hometown to the big city, in an effort to send Salvatore to the best school in the country. Neither one of them could lift it, except for Salvatore who refused to put it in his luggage. And Salvatore’s ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound — they just shrugged it off and said “He’s on vitamins and he likes to eat his vegetables.”
