Mr. Fischer, your argument is similar to those used to enact draconian voter ID laws. Yes, there is an extremely TINY amount of voter fraud, but the laws enacted to combat it end of taking away voting rights from a HUGE number of people. Thankfully the federal courts have recently put an end to some instances of this tired and corrupt CONSERVATIVE tactic — which is actually designed to keep the “wrong” people from being able to vote — at least for now. Hopefully ALL portions of the Voting Rights Act will be reinstated soon by the US Supreme Court, because the rush of various states to enact laws the moment the Supreme Court rendered their decision proves that racism is FAR from over.
The reason we “corrupt Progressives” argue against welfare laws is that we know that any attempt to combat the very small amount of fraud in SNAP will end up causing a large number of children to go hungry because of the draconian laws that would be enacted. I’d rather see a very few lottery winners get food stamps they don’t deserve than see hundreds or even thousands of needy children be deprived of food. Reagan put the concept of the “welfare queen” into the American public’s consciousness, making it seem like there were thousands of people like this, when it was exactly ONE very bad woman (for whom welfare fraud was one of the least of her many transgressions). The VAST majority of SNAP recipients are low-paid, hard-working people just trying their best to make ends meet for themselves and their children.
I suggest you pick up your Bible and check out Matthew 25:34–46. To save space and time, I’ll quote only verse 45, “[The King] will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’”
