Meta has blown away everyone with its latest sensation Threads. In its first five days, Meta Threads new text-based social network, surpassed 100 million subscribers. When compared to TikTok, which had 102.3 million active U.S. users in May, Threads is one of the most downloaded social media services in the country, according to statistics from Insider Intelligence.

A Milestone out of Organic Demand

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in a Monday Threads post announcing the milestone that the user base was “mostly organic demand” and that Meta hasn’t “turned on many promotions yet.” Although Instagram, Meta’s photo-sharing social network, had an estimated 135 million active U.S. users in May, Threads has profited from its integration with Instagram. Users can link from their Instagram account to create a Threads account.

Despite not currently being accessible in Europe due to EU data privacy laws, Meta Threads has amassed 100 million users more quickly than any other app. According to a UBS study, the artificial intelligence software ChatGPT, which took two months to reach that milestone, was easily outpaced in terms of growth rate.

Comparison with Other Social Media Networks

Globally, Meta Threads is still far behind other social media networks. According to Insider Intelligence’s May estimates, Twitter has more than 363 million users, Instagram has 1.4 billion, and Facebook has over 2 billion users.

Twitter’s popularity may be ebbing as Threads makes its debut. Twitter’s traffic ranking has gradually decreased this year, according to a graph shared on Twitter by Matthew Prince, CEO of the network security company Cloudflare.

Attempts to reach Twitter for comment on Monday were unsuccessful. Since Elon Musk purchased the business, Twitter has had a difficult few months, with a flurry of text-based competitors garnering attention this year. Twitter’s reaction to Meta Threads has been particularly fierce; shortly after its inception, Twitter threatened to sue Meta.

The Future of Threads

However, it’s obvious that there is a need for a Twitter-like programme that feels unique. Since Threads directly pulls users from Instagram, a company Meta owns, with a painless account creation process, its first week of operation saw Threads close to 100 million users, which speaks more to the app’s pent-up demand than its novelty.
