Free podcast advice all over the internet

Don’t get me wrong, I love the growth, discussion, and free advice that is offered every day on the internet about getting started in podcasting. From podcast Facebook groups, to large online news publications, like The Huffington Post’s article “What I Wish I Had Known Before Launching My Podcast: 5 Power Moves from Experts.”

I work with a network of regionally based podcasters. Their audience size is small compared to any of the podcasters mentioned in the above article. The experts’ advice in the article is sound. But keep in mind their audiences/collective audiences (Gimlet) are in the 10’s, even 100's of thousands. The top of the top of all podcasters. And that was their goal.

Right now advertisers are taking notice of podcasts that have an average of 5000 downloads per episode in a 30-day period. That puts those podcasts in the top 90% of all podcasts available (as of this writing, more than 350,000 in iTunes alone).

If you can reach 180 downloads per episode per month, you are in the top 50% of all podcasts (stats from Libsyn’s The Feed podcast 12/16) . If that’s your goal, go for it. But be realistic about where you’re taking the podcast.

180 downloads per month can be harder to reach than it looks.

But it can be done. As I advise my podcast partners, be realistic with your goals and your time. At this time, very few podcasters become rich from their podcast itself, but what you do with the podcast, in concert with your business, blog, etc. , can create an income stream — with strategy, time and effort.
