Why Successful People Do Something They Don’t Like Every Day

It’s a fact. As humans, it is our nature to steer clear of things we don’t like. We shy away from experiences that push the limits of our comfort zone. Why is this? The mind and body seek balance and homeostasis so when we are presented with an opportunity to do something we don’t like, the initial reaction is to say no, turn it down, and go back to where we are most comfortable — the routine.

If we can reverse this behavior by embracing what exists beyond our comfort zone, we can tap into unlimited growth in both our professional and personal lives. The most successful people I know seek instead of shy away from boundary-stretching opportunities and things they don’t like doing and here’s why…

It Builds Self Confidence:

Doing something you don’t like everyday compounds the interest you earn in self-confidence. Think of something you know will grow and evolve you or your business, but that you don’t want to do because you think you “can’t”. Even though you know it will take you to the next level, the perception that you “can’t” is holding you back. What if you focused on this one thing and took action to try to do it. What is the first step? It’s incredible how taking action and getting your feet wet turns “can’t” into “can”. I will standby the fact that action brings motivation, not the other way around.

Learning is Priceless:

Learning is like gold. It doesn’t matter if you succeed or fail at trying something you don’t like. Either way you win. If you succeed, you will learn. If you fail, you will learn. If you never try, you lose something very important — a chance to succeed. Don’t let the fear of failure keep you from the things that challenge you because these are the things that will up level your skills and your life. No matter what task, project or experience you set out to accomplish, you will learn. The things that require the greatest amount of risk are often the things that teach us the greatest lessons and, in turn, have the most impact on our lives.

Nothing Worthwhile Happens When You Are Comfortable:

Getting comfortable outside of your comfort zone is where the magic exists. If we are growing, we are learning, evolving and broadening our experience in the world. This requires us to say “yes” to the things we don’t want to do. Say “yes” to a chance to experience the new and push back the fear that keep us standing still. We rewire our brain every time we seek opportunities that challenge us and have a positive outcome. We are more willing to activate behavior that takes us beyond our limits the more we do it.

Increases Creativity:

Being creative is risky, vulnerable and forces us to expand our imagination. When we say yes to meetings, talks, projects and experiences outside of our daily routine, we are forced to see the world in a new way. All of these experiences give us new ways of thinking about the work we do on a daily basis. This inspires new ideas, solutions and ways to create what we want in the world. As Steve Jobs once said,“Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it.” The same routine gives the same results. Changing the routine by adding in spontaneous ventures gives more colorful, unique and impactful results.

Your Professional and Personal Life Will Benefit:

Whether it’s a relationship, professional, fitness or personal goal, doing the things you don’t want to do begins to form a habit of success throughout your life. We’ve all heard the expression; how you do one thing is how you do everything. If you begin to do the things you don’t want to do in one area of life, it is more likely you will do in all areas of your life. Like wildfire, the benefit impacts your entire life.

The mastery of success is a journey. I believe learning to resist the urge to stay comfortable and do something we don’t like every single day is a key step in the journey to incredible success and happiness.

How will you walk beyond the limits of your comfort zone? What is one thing you will do today that you do not like doing?
