Introducing Citizen Hex

Today we’re excited to share that we’ve closed a seed round from Version One Ventures, OMERS Ventures, Purpose Investments and Three Angels Capital to start building what we call an ‘Ethereum liquidity company’ on the public Ethereum blockchain.

At Citizen Hex, we’re fascinated with Ethereum’s ERC-20 tokens and believe that the Ethereum community has only just begun to explore the possible forms they can take.

Presently, this technology is being imagined using old financial paradigms: tokens look a lot more like securities than the flexible objects enabled by programmable money, and capital raises to bootstrap new networks of value look a lot like IPOs…but this mentality won’t last.

To quote a great Canadian, “the Medium is the message.” As people become aware of the radical openness of the Ethereum platform and the low cost of financial engineering on the blockchain, the process of raising capital will dramatically change form.

We believe that nearly everything will be tokenized — not only protocols, but physical objects, conceptual objects, identities, and things we can’t yet imagine. These new tokens will passed around with ease. They will be the strange hybrid of data and value that the ERC-20 standard encourages.

Given this worldview, we believe the demand for token liquidity will be astronomical, and that the rapid proliferation of tokens and exchanges will outstrip the supply of participants who can provide liquidity for trading them. That’s why we’ve set about building what we call an ‘Ethereum liquidity company’.

Unlike many companies in the space, we’re not building a protocol — we’re planning to use protocols and exchanges like 0x, EtherDelta, Augur, and Gnosis to provide token liquidity with our own software and assets.
