We’re always talking about our hearts:

I’m young at heart. You’re light-hearted. I know by heart. You stole my heart.

It’s the heart of the matter and a matter of the heart so… take it to heart. Heart-ache, heart-break, bleeding heart, cold-hearted, heavy heart, heart on my sleeve, and wild at heart.

I have my heart set on eating my heart out… to my heart’s content.

We might say of spirituality: it’s what’s in your heart that counts. We’re smart enough to see that religious activity can be heartless: cold and calculated ways to get God and other people on our side.

In the Old Testament, God addressed this issue with a horrifying admonition: “circumcise your hearts!” What the?

It kind of makes sense: circumcision was an important symbolic religious act of devotion and obedience, but it was just an outward act. The act itself said nothing of one’s heart, so God cut through the B.S. and got to the heart of the matter: “You need to be cut to the heart.

The lesson continues to ring true today, as you and I will use any external thing as a cover, smokescreen, or external credential instead of looking inward. For sure, it’s a more difficult and painful journey, and it might involve wrestling with your demons and your wounds. But the alternative is to avoid the spiritual growth you’re desiring… So, don’t you think it’s about time… to circumcise your heart?
