Numbering of National highways in India

The Government of India took a major decision in 2010 to rationalize the Numbering of National Highways in India. Numbering of National Highways should be done in a such a way that it provides some clue about the geographic location and direction of particular Highway.

Method Adopted while Numbering of National Highways in India

  • All North-South highways will carry even numbers.
  • All East-West highways will carry odd numbers.
  • All Major highways will carry single-digit or double-digit numbers.
  • North-South highways will have increasing numbering from East to West

E.g. Particular North-South highway in Central India or Western India Will have higher numbering than one in East India.

  • East-West highways will have increasing numbering from North to South

E.g. Particular East-West highway in Central India or South India Will have higher numbering than one in North India.

  • Three-digit numbered highways are secondary roots or branches of the main highway.

E.g. NH144, NH244, NH344 are the branches of main highway NH44.

  • Suffixes A, B, C, D etc. are added to the three digit sub highways to indicate a very small stretch of sub highways.

E.g. NH966A, NH527B etc.

National Highway 44 (NH44) is the longest National Highway in India. As per the old numbering system, this highway was known as NH7. It has a length of about 3745 km. It connects Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. This National Highway passes through 10 Indian states and 1 Union territory viz. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu.

2. Which is the NH 1 National highway in India?

The Shortest National Highway is NH 548. It is located in Maharashtra. It is a spur road on National Highway 48. The length of the National Highway is 5.00 km. This Highway extends from Kalamboli and forms a junction at NH348. As per the old numbering system, NH 47A was the shortest highway in India, connecting Kundanoor Junction in Kochi to Kochi Port. It had a length of about 5.9 km.
