House Republicans are Honoring Black History Month, But Don’t Support Legislation to Restore the Voting Rights Act.

Monday, February 1, marked the beginning of Black History Month, and House Republicans wasted no time posting celebratory messages on social media. But more than 50 years after the signing of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), and just months before the first presidential election in more than five decades without the VRA’s full protections, zero House Republicans support the Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the VRA in the wake of Shelby County v. Holder. If these members of Congress really want to honor Black History Month and show they’re concerned about African Americans’ access to the ballot in 2016, cosponsoring this bill would be a good way to start.
