Music is Us

I get these feeling of loneliness at times which is one normal trend for us all because not all times in our lives does excitement deface life’s scenarios. I crawl quickly into the spaces between the melodies she brings. Humanity is not a complete story without bringing into perspective what music does to our souls. It is based on this fact that I took one quick plunge into the pages that had good things to say about this worldwide phenomenon.

Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. Pitch governs melody and harmony, rhythm teams up tempo and articulation. Dynamics brings to mind loudness and softness. Timbre and texture are the colors of a musical sound.

Just a right mix of sounds emanating from an array of musical instruments whose movements could be termed as weird are all directed towards making a sound soothing to the ear lobes. I associate the different genres of music to the personalities listening to is and that’s why music makes us. The human mind consciously and unconsciously sips any information that comes its way. Music does not exist in a virtual life as the effects are seen from the way we nod our heads, tap our feet and shake our very existence to the rhythm. Our grip on knowledge and the wave of ignorance over the human race is hugely linked to the music we listen to.

“Singing songs with bad lyrical content enhances the grip of ignorance”.

Peter Alabi

That’s totally true for me and I am sure it’s same for us. Growing up , my life has been inspired hugely by my playlist especially the ones that bring me close to my creator and the others that content to my list of dos and don’ts. I throw away anything that will alter a personality I have labored to build or toy with the minds of a generation that look up to me. Though sometimes the bears, melody, pianist notes, smooth base lines and scintillating lead guitar flow all struggling to outwit each other could drag the mind into this unplanned temptation drift. But I flea once the feeling of consciousness sweeps through me once again.

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace”. Jimi Hendrix

We have the power as artists to give this world the peace and love it so needs. Countless things to sing about and make sense, gain followership and inspire that little boy or girl that sees our picture on the cover of magazines, or TV. Gun-violence, gangster life, drugs, nudity are all mundane. We should not do that. The trashy lines promoting evil should be excluded from what we churn out for the market. The images of women naked or wearing tongs used to add spice to the words are seen by our eyes which is one straight route to the mind. The negativities should not taint the positive side of life.

“Without music, life would be a mistake”. Friedrich Nietzshe

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain”.
 Bob Marley

“And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music”. Friedrich Nietzshe

“People haven’t always been there for me but music always has”.
Taylor Swift

“If music be the food of love, play on, give me excess of it, that surfeiting the appetite, the appetite may sicken, and so die”.
William Shakespeare

“Some people have life, some people have music”. John Green

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”. Victor Hugo

“Life is for the living. Death is for the dead. Let life be like music and death a note unsaid”. Langston Hughes

And a genius by all definition sums it up in these few words,

“If I were not a Physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music”.
 Albert Einstein

I say big thanks to those that have chosen to use this tool for the betterment of life. The world has been dealt a huge blow by the circle of repeated evil that is a visible proponent of our everyday life. Some people, amidst violence got solace and refuge in between the curly notes of music notations. This instrument looks little but it has a way of lifting the black hood badness has used to cast a veil on life. The role we have to play is quite simple, just toe the line of changing the mindset of a generation begging to hear some good from their speakers. Ludwig Van Beethoven and his crew of classical music composers gave us theirs and we are yet to be free from the lovely embrace their sound gave us. It still dwells in us. The likes of Macklemore (Growing Up), Big Sean (One Man Can Change The World), Simi (Love Don’t Care), Jess Glynne (Don’t Be Hard on Yourself) and a host of others are on this path of musical righteousness. Let’s embrace this.

Our life is a mixture of what he hear and see. My choice remains to listen to good music and digest the lyrics passing on the lessons to my born and unborn generation. It just takes my digital world pen to do this. Am still having this roller coaster feeling on this Ben Haggerty (Macklemore) written song and the golden vocals he gave to it. It’s a Masterpiece.

[Verse 1: Macklemore]
They say boys don’t cry
But your dad has shed a lot of tears
They say I should be a strong man
But baby, I’m still filled with fear
Sometimes I don’t know who I am
Sometimes I question why I’m here
I just wanna be a good dad
Will I be? I have no idea (* I know am gonna be a good dad)
They say girls shouldn’t be tough
And moms should raise their kids at home
But baby, I know that that isn’t true
Cause your momma’s the toughest person I know
I wanna raise you to be like her
And watch you show the world how to do it on your own
I’m still tryna figure out who I am
I don’t wanna mess this up or do this wrong
I’m gonna be there for your first breath
I don’t know if I’ll be there for your first step
I can promise you that I’ll try to work less
But the tour’s routed, and I got this album
Put in so many hours, and I just want the outcome
To be something that I can look back and I can be proud of
Don’t wanna be a dad that’s living in FaceTime
But I’ve got a world to sing to and you at the same time
I won’t spoil you, you can trust that
For your sweet sixteen, you get a bus pass
Had your heart broken? Been there, done that
I love you and I can’t give you enough of that
Get back to community that raised you up
Read Langston Hughes, I suggest “A Raisin in the Sun”
Listen to Sam Cooke, a change gon’ come
You put the work in, don’t worry about the praise, my love
Don’t try to change the world, find something that you love
 And do it every day
Do that for the rest of your life
And eventually, the world will change

[Hook: Ed Sheeran]
I’ll be patient, one more month
You’ll wrap your fingers round my thumb
Times are changing, I know
But who am I if I’m the person you become
If I’m still growing up, up, up, up
I’m still growing up, up, up, up
 I’m still growing up

[Verse 2: Macklemore]
I recommend that you read “The Alchemist”
Listen to your teachers, but cheat in calculus (* Don’t cheat my love)
Tell the truth, regardless of the consequence
And every day, give your momma a compliment
Take your girl to the prom
But don’t get too drunk hanging out the limo
Slow dance with your woman in your arms
Sneak her in after but boy, you better tiptoe
 Don’t wake your mom up
Do yoga, learn ‘bout karma
Find God, but leave the dogma
The quickest way to happiness? Learning to be selfless
Ask more questions, talk about yourself less
Study David Bowie, James Baldwin and 2Pac (*Study their lives, learn timeless lessons)
Watch the sun set with best friends from a rooftop
Wear a helmet, don’t be stupid
Jaywalk, but look before you do it
If it snows, go outside, build a jump, get some help
Get a sled, thrash the hill with your friends, ’til it melts
Go to festivals, camp, fall in love and dance
You’re only young once, my loved one, this is your chance
Take risks, cause life moves so fast
You’re only young once, my loved one, this is your chance

[Hook: Ed Sheeran]
I’ll be patient, one more month
You’ll wrap your fingers round my thumb
Times are changing, I know, but who am I if
 I’m the person you become
If I’m still growing up, up, up, up
I’m still growing up, up, up, up

[Hook: Ed Sheeran]
I’ll be patient, one more month
You’ll wrap your fingers round my thumb
Times are changing, I know
But who am I if I’m the person you become
If I’m still growing up, still growing up, still growing up
If I’m still growing up, still growing up, still growing up

[Outro: Ed Sheeran]
 I’m still growing up
 I’m still growing up, ooh
 I’m still growing up
 I’m still growing up

Thanks Macklemore for making me believe Music is Us.
