In 1917, the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway (later known as the Missouri Pacific Railroad (MoPac)) built the Fredericktown Depot. It’s a historic train station in Fredericktown, Missouri inside Madison County. In 2000, the depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The depot is a rectangular one-story rectangular brick building and the design includes both Prairie School and Bungalow/American Craftsman styles. When the depot was built, it took over passenger service. Freight was handled by the original St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad Depot. In 1972, passenger service to Fredericktown was discontinued.

The history of Fredericktown included the lead mining industry, and the railroad track coming through the area enabled the development of the mining industry.

In 1819, Fredericktown became the county seat of Madison County. Settlers were drawn to this area of Missouri. One man, Moses Austin, brought ideas that improved mining techniques. He also became a leader in the lead industry in Missouri. He ended up mining lead from 1800 through 1820 in Madison County. He helped to establish the new town of Potosi…
